Chilean corporation to propose US$25bn irrigation PPP

Chilean corporation Reguemos Chile is set to formally submit its "water highway" irrigation project, involving transporting water north through 3,900km of pipelines, in April to the country's public works ministry (MOP) as a private sector initiative.
The head of Reguemos Chile, Maximiliano Lettelier, said that the project would entail five sections and would cost a total of US$25bn, according to daily El Mercurio.
The aim of the pipeline would be to transport excess water from the south-central Maule and Biobío regions all the way to the arid Atacama region in the north, providing water to 450,000ha of land that is currently not irrigated in the O'Higgins, Metropolitana, Valparaíso, Coquimbo and Atacama regions.
Lettelier added that he hoped that the project could be tendered as a public-private partnership (PPP) and that the five sections could be tendered separately.
Consulting firm KPMG is working with the corporation on the relevant financial studies.
