Prosecutors to investigate lack of sanitation infra around Belo Monte hydro unit

Brazil’s public prosecutor will investigate if the Norte Energia consortium that built and operates the Belo Monte hydropower plant in Pará state has carried out sanitation works, as stipulated in the 35-year concession contract.

“It came to the attention of the public prosecutor’s office that residents compulsorily removed and allocated in collective urban resettlements live daily with a lack of water, which also affects other neighborhoods,” according to a press release by the public prosecutor’s office.

Norte Energia comprises public firms Eletrobras, Eletronorte, Cemig, and Light. It was required to install sanitation infrastructure as precondition for receiving the environmental license, as residents of various localities had to leave their traditional homes to make room for the project.

"The objective will be to evaluate the sanitary conditions of [Altamira] municipality after the installation of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant. It will also be analyzed whether the company responsible for the plant complied with the federal court sentence that forced it to install the sanitation system," the release said.

The inspection includes neighborhood meetings and will take place between November 7 and November 11.

The 18-turbine plant on the Xingú River is the country's largest hydropower unit and the third largest in the world.
