To guarantee the supply of electrical energy, improve electricity prices, create green jobs, attract new investments in infrastructure, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, take care of the environment and contribute to economic reactivation, the National Secretariat of Energy issued resolution No. MIPRE-2024-0001384 that recommends ETESA prepare the tender documents to tender the long-term purchase of energy, power and associated energy.

This tender of 500 MW in power guarantees, in the long term, the supply of electrical energy to the users served by the electricity distribution companies, through new or existing renewable power plants, which represent an investment of approximately up to 400 million of balboas.

This tender ensures the reduction of 17.5 million tons of CO2, which represents 29% of the total Nationally Determined Contribution of Panama, within the framework of the Paris Agreement, generating up to 4,600 new jobs locally.

In addition, this will be the first long-term tender exclusively for renewable energies to be carried out in Panama in the last 10 years and the first in the Central American region that incorporates battery storage systems, to give more flexibility to the National Electric System.

With this action, the country moves with certainty towards the decarbonization of the electricity sector and implements its Energy Transition Agenda, taking a firm step so that Panama makes effective its global commitment to climate change from the energy sector, in addition it contributes to the goal of achieve an energy storage capacity of 5% of the total demand planned for 2030.

The supply by the companies that are contracted will begin on September 1, 2026 for existing renewable plants, and until January 1, 2029 for new renewable plants.

This public bidding event will be held in the first quarter of 2024 and a representative number of bidders are expected to participate, so the expectation is that prices will be competitive.

This tender confirms Panama as a destination for new local and international investments in clean energy and will contribute to future socioeconomic development, through the creation of synergies between the social, economic and environmental indicators of Panama and will position the country as a reliable energy HUB and clean technologies at the forefront of the region.
