Voith hails local content proposal for Brazil power sector

Bnamericas Published: Monday, November 18, 2013

Voith Brazil has praised a proposal for new local content rules governing Brazil's electric power sector.

The German-based equipment firm, whose Brazil operations include branches in the states of São Paulo, Paraná and Bahia, said in a statement the company was ideally equipped to meet local demand.

"Voith has welcomed the initiative to impose local content requirements of equipment purchases by electric utility companies," Voith said.

"This legal initiative is a comprehensive step [and] Voith considers itself as well prepared."

Earlier this month Folha de S Paulo reported that Brazil's industry and foreign trade ministry was leading a push for a 60% base requirement on locally sourced equipment for power projects.

The move would align the sector with the country's oil and gas industry, which has a minimum local content obligation of 65%.

Other multinationals with Brazilian subsidiaries that stand to benefit from the move are Siemens, Alstom and Andritz Group.
