Medellín's US$540mn wastewater plant moves forward

The Bello wastewater treatment plant in the Colombian city of Medellín began a trial period that is expected to end during the third quarter, said Jorge Londoño, CEO of Medellín-based multi-utility EPM.

During a presentation of EPM's 2017 results, Londoño said the 1.5tn-peso (US$540mn) plant should be operating in September at the latest.

Medellín will become the first Latin American city to treat up to 75% of its wastewater thanks to the new plant, according to Londoño.

The plant will treat 5,000m3/s of wastewater in the north area of the Aburrá-Medellín river valley. The project also includes six anaerobic digestion chambers to produce methane gas that will meet 30% of its power needs.
