The system will allow energy savings, reduction of air pollution and decrease vehicle congestion. The project also considers a connection to Juan Santamaría international airport. According to the value engineering process, the train would operate all day with frequencies of between three to five minutes. It would have 42 stations, five of which would be built as elevated. The engineering contemplated the construction of 11 intermodal hubs to connect with bus lines. The project would be a double-track rail line, and would be 100% electric. It will use existing rights-of-way, so no expropriations are being contemplated. The rail line would link the cities of Cartago, San José, Heredia, and Alajuela, crossing another 15 cantons.
