Goiás state, in mid-west Brazil, has formalized its participation in the national program for strengthening water basin committees (Procomitês), which is being overseen by Brazil's national water authority ANA.
The program will improve institutional and operational capacities for water basin programs and the state will be eligible to receive some 2.1mn reais (US$650,000) to support the activities of 10 water basin committees in the next five years.
One of the main objectives of Procomitês is to contribute to the implementation and efficacy of water management instruments to improve the quality and availability of water resources, in addition to promote the training of members of water committees to reduce asymmetries of knowledge and organization, and stimulate communication of water objectives with the public.
Along with Goiás, 12 other Brazilian states are part of the program, including Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sergipe and Tocantins.
