Mexico invests over US$1bn in strategic bridges
Mexico is making progress in the construction of bridges as a central part of its six-year infrastructure plan, with investments aimed at improving connectivity and boosting regional economies, providing a key stimulus for territorial integration.
Within the road portfolio through 2030, which envisages 315 billion (bn) pesos, the bridges and interchanges segment concentrates 18.1bn pesos (US$1bn) to develop 29km of new structures focused on easing urban congestion and strategic corridors.
Among the most relevant projects are the Nichupté Bridge in Quintana Roo, with an extension of 11 km and an investment of 3.84bn pesos, designed to reduce travel times in Cancún from 55 to 10 minutes; the Rizo de Oro bridge in Chiapas; and the access to the port of Veracruz. Likewise, the Alameda Oriente project in the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico stands out.
"18.1bn pesos are allocated for 29 km… we are in process on 11 more and in 2026 starting eight additional ones,” said the head of the infrastructure, communications and transport ministry (SICT), Jesús Esteva.
In the State of Mexico, the reconstruction of the Alameda Oriente 1 and 2 bridges —damaged by the 2017 earthquake— is progressing as scheduled, according to the SICT. These structures will total 1.2 km in length and three lanes in each direction, will benefit more than one million people, and will allow an estimated flow of 65,000 vehicles per day between Nezahualcóyotl and Mexico City.
Work is currently underway on the first 500m bridge, including the driving of 1,892 piles, with a view to completion in October 2026. The second 700m bridge is expected to be finished in 2027. The redesign incorporates geotechnical and structural studies to ensure greater resilience.
Guerrero
In parallel, the SICT is building eight bridges in Guerrero as part of the priority Salina Cruz–Zihuatanejo corridor, which is 423 km long and costs 24.7bn pesos.
Within the six-year plan, Mexico is executing 113bn pesos (about US$6.6bn) in priority pillars to intervene in 2,485km of infrastructure.
In Guerrero, the Nexpa, Talapilla, Quetzala, Santa Catarina, Las Vigas, Agua Hedionda, Copala and Marquelia I bridges add up to 1,200 m of roadways and constitute the first section developed in the state within this strategic corridor.
These structures, located on the Las Cruces–Pinotepa Nacional highway, seek to improve connectivity in the Costa Chica and the Montaña Alta, benefiting 1.9 million inhabitants.
In 2025, 27 km of this road were upgraded and this year work is being carried out on 37 more km; the works are expected to be fully completed in December 2029.
