EnvMin Signs Crime Decree

Brazil's environment minister Jose Sarney Filho today will sign an environment crime decree that will fine environmental offences up to US$26.5mn. Unauthorized activities in the hydroelectric power generation, oil drilling and mining sectors may be fined up to US$5.3mn, while the unauthorized transport of hazardous materials will be fined between US$265 to US$1.06mn. The unauthorized transport of radioactive waste may be fined up to US$5.3mn. Fines for illegally lighting forest fires or felling trees will be US$800 per affected hectare or US$265 per cubic meter of wood.
