Chile investigates sewage spill on coastline

This is an automated translation of the original release from the Superintendency of Sanitary Services published in Spanish.

The Superintendency of Sanitary Services (SISS) is on the ground supervising the mitigation actions that Aguas Antofagasta is taking, after verifying the discharge of sewage from the Croacia lifting plant towards the coastline and which was later diverted to the southern lifting plant.

The concessionaire has the obligation to guarantee the quality and continuity of the services it provides, including the collection of sewage (art. 35 of the General Law of Sanitary Services). In this context, the SISS, along with investigating the root causes of the failure of the sanitation infrastructure, has instructed the company to take provisional measures that allow it to continue sewage collection services during the emergency, an aspect that is being also audited.

At the same time, the SISS will formally require the concessionaire to supply all the technical information regarding the event, such as specifications of the damaged infrastructure, maintenance history, origin of the failure, estimated discharge volume, communication to authorities, detail of mitigation actions, among others, and the actions that will be implemented to guarantee the continuity of the service in the future.

The SISS also reported that it instructed the utility to carry out the necessary coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and highway authorities to minimize the effects that recovery work on the damaged sanitation infrastructure may cause.
