Mexico will announce at COP27 the increase in its climate ambitions

Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico (Semarnat)

Press Release No. 108/22

Mexico City, November 8, 2022

Mexico arrives at the COP27 on Climate Change with the commitment to increase the ambition of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to go from 22% to 30% in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions with its own resources, in addition to a conditional goal strengthened from 36% to 40%, which in real terms will allow in the medium and long term to protect the most vulnerable population.

The above was reported by the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, María Luisa Albores González, during a broadcast to expose the actions of the Government of Mexico during its participation in the international event held in Egypt. The head of Semarnat ratified that the reduction of black carbon emissions remains at 51% in an unconditional way and 70% percent conditioned.

He explained that to reach these goals, Semarnat has identified more than 40 measures in all economic sectors through solutions based on nature, low-carbon transport and industrial regulation and promotion, which will allow an estimated total annual reduction by 2030 of 88.9 MtCO2e (million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent).

He highlighted that with the Sembrando Vida Program, the increase in Protected Natural Areas (ANP) and the National Blue Carbon Strategy, a reduction of 27 MtCO2 (million tons of carbon dioxide) is estimated. During this administration, three new ANPs have been created: Sierra de San Miguelito, Lake Texcoco and Parque Jaguar, in the states of San Luis Potosí, Mexico and Quintana Roo, respectively. It is intended to create another five to reach 190 ANP, which would contribute to a mitigation of 8 MtCO2 per year by 2030, said the head of Semarnat.

With regard to low-carbon transport, he highlighted the Glasgow Pact for Electromobility, with which it is sought that 50% of new light vehicles sold in 2030 be zero emissions; remote work or teleworking and the promotion of rail transport, whose actions as a whole add up to an estimated 31.4 MtCO2.

In regulation and industrial promotion, a mitigation of the order of 27 MtCO2e is calculated through a program for cogeneration and regulation of energy efficiency, as well as the National Circular Economy Strategy, with which 3.5 MtCO2e per year would be reduced by 2030.

Finally, the head of Semarnat reported that the issue of climate adaptation, which requires financing and international cooperation, will also be discussed. In this area, Mexico has advanced with 7 regional forums and a national forum with which it will show at the COP a form of public policy that starts from the communities, he said.

On behalf of Semarnat, the person in charge of the office of the general directorate of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, Agustín Ávila Romero, and the head of the International Affairs Coordination Unit, Miguel Ángel Zerón, attend COP27, who according to the agenda They will focus on the themes already mentioned: adaptation, loss and damage, and climate finance.
