São Paulo greenlights start of US$340mn metro line extension

São Paulo state authorized the start of works to extend line No. 15-silver of the metro, with investment estimated at 1.8bn reais (US$340mn).

The works comprise a 3km extension to the east with two new stations, Boa Esperança and Jacu Pêssego. Completion is expected in 2025, the state government said in a release.

The works will be carried out by the Expresso Boa Esperança consortium, formed by Construtora Queiroz Galvão and MPO Soluções.

The project also includes construction of the Ragueb Chohfi parking patio.

To serve the new stretch, state company Metrô ordered 19 new trains in January, increasing the fleet to 46 units to operate on the line.

The project is expected to benefit 90,000 people a day,

Currently, line 15 is 14.6km long and has 11 stations between Vila Prudente and Jardim Colonial. The extended line is expected to be used by 480,000 passengers a day.

Metrô is planning an additional extension of the line to Ipiranga station, with the works in the bidding phase, adding another 1.8km and a new station.
