TIM, VIVO in network-sharing deal
TIM and Vivo have expanded a deal to share 3G infrastructure, allowing their customers to use their cellphones in over 570 Brazilian cities.
According to TIM, the network-sharing partnership will benefit more than 131mn users of both operators and allow the companies to invest in 4G and 5G.
Earlier this year, telecom watchdog Anatel approved a sharing model of wireless frequencies of operators Oi and TIM in the 2.5GHz and the 1.8GHz bands (4G). TIM also signed an infrastructure-sharing agreement in August with Claro covering 700 municipalities where only one of the carriers is present.
Brazil has thousands of cities with less than 30,000 residents that are served by only one operator, as a result of Anatel requiring each operator to offer services in small municipalities when it auctioned 3G spectrum.
