Steelmaker buying hydro construction licenses

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau's (NYSE: GGB) board has approved the acquisition of construction and operation rights for the São João and Cachoeirinha hydroelectric plants, Gerdau told securities regulator CVM. São João and Cachoeirinha both are in Paraná state and will have installed capacity of 60MW and 45MW respectively. Engineering firm Enterpa Engenharia holds the rights to build the plants. Gerdau will invest 340mn reais (US$175mn) to build the two plants. Construction will start in January 2008 in time for April 2011 operations, said Gerdau.
