Brasília to invest in subway expansion
The Brasília federal district announced plans to expand its subway next year and looks to offer concessions to operate the network.
According to Brasília governor Ibaneis Rocha, who in October was reelected for four more years, the subway line in the Samambaia region will be extended with an investment of approximately 360mn reais (US$66mn). Next year, new funds are also expected to be released to extend the line in the Ceilândia region.
"Regarding public transport, we have to expand the subway lines here in the federal district, and we also have to work [to offer] concessions as quickly as possible, to improve the quality of service for the population," Rocha said in a press release.
The 42km subway network in Brazil’s capital has 24 stations and is divided into six regions.
Rocha also announced a plan to construct a hospital to serve local government employees and to build daycare centers, although he did reveal the amounts to be invested.
