Brazil to boost clean energy transition

Brazil will advance the clean energy transition and create a dedicated department within the mines and energy ministry.

“We are going to focus our efforts on modernizing our generation park, investing in technology and optimizing management, always looking for a balance between rate affordability and supply reliability,” Alexandre Silveira (pictured) said in a speech after being sworn in as mines and energy minister.

"The future of our generation must be guided toward innovation, the expansion of renewable sources, which, combined with the incorporation of storage technologies, low-carbon hydrogen, will place the Brazilian energy matrix once again at the forefront of sustainability in the world," he added.

To support the energy efforts, the mining sector should diversify and contribute more nickel, lithium and copper, Silveira said.

“Brazil stands out as one of the main frontiers for global investment in mining. We need to develop intelligence so that this investment is going not only into more jobs but also, as an inducer of development, mainly in producing states, into greater well-being for society, with a special view toward the most directly affected populations and the sustainability of mining,” he added.

Silvestre highlighted that the government will monitor efficiency and enforce competition rules, as well as punish owners of poorly used or abandoned deposits.
