China widening Nicaragua energy scope

Bnamericas

Nicaragua and China have strengthened economic and political ties after the Central America country reestablished diplomatic relations with the Asian giant in 2021.

The signing of a free trade agreement between the nations in August has cemented the relationship even further.

In a latest development, China is now eyeing expanding its presence in Nicaragua’s power sector.

President Daniel Ortega authorized the finance ministry to ink a credit facility agreement with China Communications Construction for nearly 66mn euros (US$70mn), according to a presidential accord published in the official gazette.

The funds will support the design and construction of a solar plant for state water utility Enacal in San Isidro, Matagalpa department. Additional details were not disclosed.

In recent days, Enacal relaunched bidding to build a 15MW photovoltaic array in León department.

Earlier this year, Ortega’s government and the China International Development Cooperation Agency signed an agreement to support the installation of 150MW of thermal capacity.
