Colombia aims to fight Magdalena basin pollution

Bnamericas

Colombia has launched a platform to report on solid waste pollution in the Magdalena basin, the environment ministry said in a statement.

The tool will allow participants to upload pictures and report actual pollution incidents along the Magdalena basin, considered by the World Bank as one of the main sources of contamination in the Caribbean Sea.

"It's going to be fundamental. Just like we have weather alerts, we also need to generate alerts for emergency situations at sea," said Elizabeth Taylor Jay, head of coastal affairs and water resources department.

Some 18mn units of plastic are dumped every day into the Caribbean Sea, causing environmental damage to the sea and costing the fishing and tourism industries US$1.27bn a year, according to the World Bank.
