Colombia posts best Q1 in 6 years

Bnamericas

Colombia posted faster-than-expected growth in the first quarter when the economy expanded 6.4% year-on-year, comfortably beating the market forecast of 5.1%.

Finance minister Mauricio Cárdenas said it was the highest Q1 growth rate in six years for the Andean nation.

The country was coming off a 5.3% growth in the fourth quarter.

All the country's economic sectors grew in Q1, with expansion led by construction, which expanded 17.2% year-on-year.

Cárdenas was particularly pleased that the country's manufacturing sector had returned to growth (3.3%) after two quarters of contractions. He also said that it was the best growth rate for the struggling manufacturing sector in two years, and that its recovery is "now under way."
