Jamaica govt prepares population for dry season

Bnamericas

Jamaican authorities are advising locals to conserve water in preparation for the upcoming dry season, due to start in December and last until next April.

Local catchment facility, the Mona reservoir, contains 550mn gallons (250mn liters) or 66% of total capacity, the government's information service reported.

Another water body, the Hermitage dam, is at 100% capacity but only 40% of the volume can be used because of siltation.

South-central and south-western areas of the country are forecast to be most affected during the dry season.

"... I am putting the country on alert that the next traditional drought period starts in December and runs through to April next year," water minister Robert Pickersgill said.
