Rupture leaves Mexico Valley without water

A failure in the Cutzamala distribution system left 11 municipalities in the Mexico Valley without water supply as of Thursday.

The leak occurred at the system's fourth intake, which supplies the potable water distribution mega circuit and is located between the limits of Huixquilucan and Naucalpan municipalities.

The affected municipalities include Atizapán de Zaragoza, Coacalco, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Ecatepec, Huixquilucan, Naucalpan, Nezahualcóyotl, Nicolás Romero, Tecámac, Tlalnepantla and Tultitlán.

According to José Manuel Camacho, director of Mexico state's water commission (CAEM), solving the problem is expected to take some 72 hours, state-owned news agency Notimex reported.

In operation for 30 years, the Cutzamala system consists of two distribution lines and draws water from seven reservoirs in the Mexico Valley. A third line is currently under construction to ensure water supply for residents in the Mexico City metropolitan area.
