São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin has asked state water utility Sabesp to expand its current water conservation discount program due to the state's water crisis.

Under the current program, customers get a 30% discount on their utility bill when they decrease water use at least 20%. The governor proposed lifting the minimum reduction and granting a 5% discount, for example, if the user cut consumption 5%.

"Sometimes people reduce their usage by 15%, or even 19%, and do not get a rebate. We are proposing that Sabesp give a discount to these customers," local paper Valor Econômico quoted the governor as saying on Thursday.

As of Thursday, Cantareira – the state's main water supply system – was operating at 4.1% of capacity.
