Sabesp renews Salesópolis, Poá water services contracts

São Paulo state water utility Sabesp renewed contracts to provide services in the towns of Salesópolis and Poá for the next 30 years.

Under the contracts, Sabesp said it will invest 184mn reais (US$49.7mn) in the two localities to expand water supply and collection and treatment of sewage.

Sabesp said it will use 161mn reais of the amount for projects in Poá and the rest will be invested in Salesópolis over the period, in improving water treatment and expansion of the sewage collection system.

"The renewal reflects the results of Sabesp's operations in both towns," the company said in a statement.

"In Poá, for example, sanitation indicators have improved since the company took over services in 1977. At that time, the water coverage index was only 50%, sewage coverage was only 20% and there was no sewage treatment," added the company, highlighting that currently 100% of the town's population receives drinking water and 97.6% of sewage is collected and 87.2% treated.

Sabesp has provided services in Salesópolis since 1976 and currently 93.6% of residents receive treated water, while the sewage collection rate is 88.3%, Sabesp said.
