Hurricane Amanda, the first of the Mexican hurricane season, could cause landslides, flooding, riverbank breaches and road damage across the country, the government warned.

Amanda was this morning (May 27) upgraded to a category three hurricane and located around 990km southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur state.

The hurricane has a wind speed of around 205km/h, and is wide, which means the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima and Nayarit could experience very heavy rainfall, Mexican water commission Conagua said in a release.

The hurricane, which originated in the Pacific, has been gathering strength since May 24, when it was first upgraded to a category one.

Conagua has predicted 14 tropical cyclones from the Pacific and nine from the Atlantic for the hurricane season, which runs from May-October.

In 2013, 32 tropical cyclones made landfall across Mexico. These comprised 21 tropical storms, 10 hurricanes and one tropical depression.

While Hurricane Raymond was the strongest climate event of 2013, tropical storms Manuel and Ingrid caused the most damage, estimated at US$5.7bn.
