In October, XM continued adding energy with the agents and different actors in the production chain through the operation of the National Interconnected System -SIN-, and the administration of the Wholesale Energy Market -MEM-, so that Colombia would have an energy service reliable and secure.

Below, we present the status of the main energy variables of the Colombian electricity system as of October 31, 2022: energy reservoirs, water contributions, generation and international electricity transactions.

power reservoir

In October, the aggregate level of the electric power generation reservoirs was 86.5% of the useful volume, 2.5 points above the level reported at the end of September 2022 (84%), reaching all-time highs for the date of the last 20 years. On the other hand, the contributions for the month of October were 26% above the historical average. When performing the analysis by hydrological regions, the Antioquia reservoirs reached 99.8% of their useful volume, followed by Oriente with 87.9%, Caribe with 87.4%, Centro with 73.8% and Valle with 68.2%.

This is the behavior of the main reservoirs in the country according to their capacity for power generation, as can be seen, the main reservoirs in the system are close to their maximum storage capacity, with the exception of the Bogotá aggregate.

According to Jaime Alejandro Zapata Uribe, manager of the XM National Dispatch Center: "During the month of October we saw water contributions higher than the historical average for the ninth consecutive month, which has allowed us to maintain the system's reserves at 86.5% of the useful volume of the reservoir, highlighting that the main reservoirs of the system are close to their maximum storage capacity with the exception of the Bogota aggregate; This behavior of contributions is expected to continue at least during the remainder of this year, as reported by IDEAM. It should be noted that Valle, Centro and Antioquia were the regions of our country that had the highest contributions in October above 110% with respect to their historical average”.

dumping

During the past month, the amount of water evacuated from the reservoirs through the landfills is equivalent to 1,040.17 GWh. The regions that presented discharges were: Center with 644.38 GWh, Antioquia with 362.39 GWh and Valle with 33.44 GWh.

water contributions

Water contributions closed the month with an average of 26% above the historical monthly average. The water contributions by region were: Valle with 179.7%, Center with 174.0%, Antioquia with 112.2%, Caribbean with 91.1% and Oriente with 86.4%.

Generation

In total, in October 6,632.82 GWh were generated. On average during the month, power generation was 213.96 GWh-day, 0.01% more compared to the generation of September 2022, which was 213.94 GWh-day. Water contributions closed the month with an average of 26% above the historical monthly average. The water contributions by region were: Valle with 179.7%, Center with 174.0%, Antioquia with 112.2%, Caribbean with 91.1% and Oriente with 86.4%.

89.67% of the generation, equivalent to 191.86 GWh-day average, was the product of renewable resources, while the remaining 10.33%, equivalent to 22.10 GWh-day average, was from non-renewable resources.

Renewable energy

The source of energy with the greatest contribution was hydraulic generation with 97.90%, equivalent to 187.83 GWh-day average (increasing 2.92% in relation to the previous month).

By energy source, hydraulic plants with reservoirs were the largest contributors with 85.12%, equivalent to an average 163.31 GWh-day (increasing 2.60% in relation to the previous month), while running-of-water plants contributed 12.78%, equivalent to 24.52 GWh-day, 5.11% more than the previous month.

non-renewable energy

The total generation with non-renewable resources (fossil fuel) for the month of October was 22.10 GWh-day average (18.93% less compared to the previous month).

By energy source, gas generation represented 80.20%, equivalent to 17.73 average GWh-day (18.83% less compared to the previous month), followed by coal with 19.58%, equivalent to 4.33 average GWh-day (14.54 % less in relation to the previous month).

TIE transactions

Within the framework of the International Electricity Transactions -TIE with Ecuador, in October, Colombia exported a total of 79.25 GWh, 118.28% above the export values of the previous month (36.30 GWh) and imported 0.37 GWh, which when compared with the previous month, a decrease of 98.5% (24.79 GWh) is evident.

From XM we continue with a permanent monitoring of the system variables and working with the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the other actors of the energy ecosystem to ensure the provision of the service with security and reliability.
