NEW REPORT: Electric Power Capex 2021
Latin America's electric energy sector is poised to see a sharp rise in capital expenditure in 2021 as it emerges from the annus horribilis that was 2020, according to the latest BNamericas Intelligence Series report.
Twelve of the biggest power companies with a presence in the region, for whom figures are available, have set aside US$20.74bn in combined capital investments, up from US$13.70bn last year.
The prospect of higher spending coincides with an increasingly upbeat economic outlook, despite the ongoing fight against COVID-19 and the generally slow pace of vaccine programs.
Unlike much of the last decade, it is not just the solar and wind segments catapulting new developments in electric power. Investments are also multiplying across the region in hydrogen, gas-to-power, battery storage, digitalization and distributed generation initiatives.
Meanwhile, opportunities abound for infrastructure that will connect non-conventional renewable energy projects to national grids, particularly in Brazil, Colombia and Chile.
Transmission expansion plans that aim to reduce congestion and improve resiliency are also underway in Peru, Paraguay, Central America and the Caribbean region.
