Ecuador's US$600mn cable car to be PPP

Ecuador's US$600mn Metroférico cable car system unveiled last week will be carried out as a PPP and is expected to be tendered in the next three or four months, according to a government official.

In an interview with Radio Pública, land transport and alternative transportation secretary Paul Hernández (pictured) said studies for the project, which would link Quito's airport with the city's main business district, began in 2010 but only gathered steam last month when a consortium comprising Doppelmayr, Inoride and Resi sent an expression of interest.

"We expect to launch the tender in a three to four month period. And we hope to start the first stage of the project [La Carolina-Tumbaco] in early 2020," Hernández was quoted as saying.

Last week, President Lenín Moreno said the first stage would cost US$320mn, while the second, extending the line to Mariscal Sucre airport, will cost US$280mn.

Hernández added that the system, which will have 10 stations, will use 110 cabins with capacity for up to 38 passengers each.
